Frequently Asked Questions

How does the program work?

You’ll have the opportunity to explore our directory and book a 30-minute call with one of our mentors. Do you want to talk with a fellow Latina in your region? Someone who can take a look at your internship application? Someone who has management experience? We’ve got you covered. We’ve built this program so you can tailor your search and find an expert who matches your needs.

These sessions are free. Afterwards, you can decide whether to keep the call as a one-time coaching session, or continue to develop a mentoring relationship.

Who qualifies as a mentee?

You identify as a Latina/Hispanic. You are a journalism student or you work in the journalism industry as a reporter, editor, copy editor, fact-checker, producer, photojournalist, videographer, and so on. You get the idea! Full-time staffers, contractors, freelancers—everyone is welcome.

We believe in an inclusive definition of “women.” Mentorship is available for cis women and trans women, as well as genderqueer and non-binary femmes.

Who qualifies to be a mentor?

Aside from being a current student, it’s the same as above, except we expect you to have logged at least three years of experience in the industry. Latinas who wish to be mentors can fill out this application. Our mentors are all volunteers. While we vet each professional, oftentimes the mentors will not know each other personally.

Is this only open to Latinas/Hispanic women?

Yes. There are already resources out there that cater to all women in journalism seeking advice and support from colleagues. We aim to answer the longstanding calls for Latinas to be mentored by fellow Latinas, for the same reason affinity groups exist.

Who created this site?

This program is organized by Andrea González-Ramírez, a New York-based independent journalist from Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. She modeled the initiative after Katie Hawkins-Gaar's outstanding program, Digital Women Leaders.

How does this program work financially? Do I have to pay a fee to participate?

This is a non-profit, volunteer-based program. Our mentors are kindly lending their time, which allows mentees to have free access to this resource. Any website costs, including domain hosting and other annual fees, are currently covered by the creator.

How can I support this initiative?

Spread the word! Share our information online, on social media, with your colleagues, friends, and whoever is seeking mentorship from fellow Latinas. If you’re a mentee, please share a testimony here.

I have additional questions or ideas. How can I share them?

Please fill out this form. We’d love to hear from you! We are always open to inquiries and advice on how this resource can be improved for its participants.
