About

The Latinas in Journalism Mentorship Program is for Latina women and femmes working in news and seeking mentorship from fellow Latinas in the industry. Our goal is to match them with experienced, kickass journalism professionals who can give them the support they need at a time when we continue to be underrepresented in our field.

Research has found people of color constitute less than 23% of all newsroom jobs and around 19% of supervisor roles in the United States. There’s no data on how many of those positions are filled by Latinas. We know it can be hard to find someone who can help you and who has similar lived experiences to you. This initiative aims to make mentorship more accessible for Latinas by connecting them directly with 58 mentors who are ready to listen and help take their career to the next level.

This program was inspired by the incredible Facebook community Latinas in Journalism, created by veteran journalist Rebecca Aguilar in 2017. It is modeled it after Katie Hawkins-Gaar's outstanding resource, Digital Women Leaders.

How this program works

In our Find a Mentor page, people will find a directory of Latina journalists. It includes categories such as Region, Medium, Industry Expertise, and many more. Mentees will have the opportunity to pick a mentor who seems like a good fit, and book a 30-minute call with them. These sessions are free, as all of our mentors are volunteers. The topics to be discussed during the call are left up to mentees. Afterwards, mentees can decide whether to keep the call as a one-time coaching session, or continue to develop a mentoring relationship with our experts.
